Carson Kelly's Homer Powers Tigers to Victory

Tigers catcher hits three-run shot in five-run fifth inning

Detroit defeats the New York Yankees 6-5

NEW YORK (AP) -- Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run fifth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Kelly, who signed a $35 million club option with the Tigers in the offseason, is working on his swing mechanics and it showed against the Yankees. He hit a 1-2 curveball from Domingo Germán over the left-center field wall to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

"I'm just trying to stay simple and see the ball deep," Kelly said. "I'm not trying to do too much. I'm just trying to put a good swing on it and hit it hard."

The Tigers added another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Cabrera. Detroit's bullpen held on from there, with Gregory Soto getting the final three outs for his first save of the season.

The victory was the Tigers' second in a row and improved their record to 3-4. The Yankees fell to 4-3.

Conclusion:

Kelly's homer was a big moment in the game and helped the Tigers secure a much-needed victory. The 29-year-old catcher is a key part of Detroit's lineup and his performance on Friday night was a reminder of his potential. If Kelly can continue to produce at a high level, the Tigers could be a surprise team in the American League this season.
